Huge thanks to the folks at the Kalmar Nyckel for sharing these pictures.
More from Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens
We’ve wanted to visit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens for years. We enjoyed the numerous birds, scavenger hunt, and infinite flow of folk art.
Full-On Unschool
Today was packed. The boys started with an improv theater class, then we came home for lunch and a wind down before biking to the library. There, I took care of some exciting personal business (more on that in the very near future) and they engaged in self-directed learning on how to create Roblox games using coding script. Once back home, they played with neighborhood friends for a couple hours before dinner. During dinner we watched a lesson from Tom Woods’ Western Civilization course and followed it up with an episode of Ancient Apocalypse.
Jiu-Jitsu Day
After church this morning, we drove down to Riverfront Jii-Jitsu to support friends in competition and enjoy a few hours of matches.
Pumpkin Carve
I’ll have to follow up with more pictures, but we always have a good time carving pumpkins with our favorite people.
It wasn’t a contest, but I’m declaring Olive the winner:
Potter for the Win
When my boys encountered a puzzle contest at the library, I wouldn’t let them use the internet since I knew the answer could be found in the stacks.
The puzzle was a shredded copy of a Harry Potter (that much was obvious from many of the visible proper nouns) book in a clear plastic barrel. This volume had been banned in certain places and the puzzle was to figure out the title of the book.
The boys asked me to look up which Potter book had been banned, but since we had read all of them, I knew we could find out for ourselves.

A couple of the names narrowed our guesses to the last couple installments. We found copies of those books and started to compare. Ultimately, we spotted some fragments of chapter headings and compared them to the two tables of contents. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows matched two headings and we had our guess.
Our correct choice won us a car load ticket to Winterthur’s Drive-In Movie Weekend. It was an easy choice to go for the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone showing tonight.
My girlfriend and I walked the grounds for an hour before we settled in for snacks and hot chocolate during the feature.
It was a beautiful night from our close encounters with two bats in the woods to the chilly finale of the film.
Saturday Night Study
My sons are performing in an adaptation of Don Quixote this fall. The director was lucky enough to find a local performance of Man of La Mancha, the musical version of the Spanish novel.
I love these opportunities to dive into our interests. And the production was impressive. A small and highly talented troupe brought the tragic hero’s tale of the Knight of the Qoeful Countenance to life.
Unschool at the Barn
We field tripped to Carousel Park & Equestrian Center today to learn about therapeutic riding, riding styles, diets, care, and grooming.
We were joined by old friends and new. Our community is always growing and I am grateful for today’s new connections.
Legoland Adventure Day
We love to visit Legoland Discovery Center during their Homeschool Weeks.
The highlight for my boys is the minifigure trading. They load up their fanny packs with minifigs and exchange with employees (and the occasional visitor) to refresh their collections.
I enjoy the chill atmosphere and relaxed building time.
