I’m not concerned with attacks from outside Christianity when much of the church leadership is taking it apart fom the inside.
Rogan on a Sunday
Jordan Peterson did something special for Joe Rogan’s audience.
In the second hour, he reviews the biblical book of Exodus. He then circles back to Scriptural references as he relates them to modern concerns over the next hour.
This is the kind of discussion I rarely hear on Rogan’s show. Although not religiously-based, I imagine this was some of the only positive commentary on the Bible that much of his audience has heard.
Lego Derby
The Zerbeys showed up strong to win multiple awards in the design categories. My younger son won the second-place trophy for all-around best design. I wasn’t sure his bridge design was sturdy enough to make it down the track, but it had respectable times and a judge-pleasing look. I was happy to be so wrong.
My older son started a great idea with a crocodile head, but when he changed his plan, I took over and made it into my own creation to win the adult design award. His own build came in second in his division for design.
That’s About It
In the last couple months, I’ve gotten trimmer and stronger. This is about freedom. This is about learning and improving and seeing the potential I have yet to access.
The Second Purge
I wonder how many homeschoolers start their journey in February. Every year there is a new wave of parents and children who become fed up with the failures of the education system. I’m seeing a lot of frantic questions as families choose to escape mid school year.
One of the common concerns is about making sure the child stays on her learning course. I understand the fear of “falling behind,” but the school has been lacking, not the home.
When responding to an “I don’t want her to miss anything” question, I replied with this:
There’s a lot you want her to miss. That’s why you’re pulling her from her current arrangement, right?
Trying to “keep up” with a system that has failed you and your daughter is not the way to go.
The first step is to stop with institutionalized education and observe what its effects have been. Notice the damage and heal before moving forward. Your daughter has seen many more hours in a classroom than even the most driven home educators employ in a full year. You both need a break.
This is the doorway to deschooling. Parent and child must escape the assumptions trained into us by generations of compulsory schooling. It looks like a vacation at first, but becomes unnerving when you realize how many things about your own path that you have not examined. I believe it becomes life’s mission to know oneself. As we observe our children, we observe ourselves. Home education gives you a clear, broad window into your child’s life and a mirror by which to examine your own.
365 Devotionals: Spiritually Homeless…Again
Just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.
-Colossians 2:6 NLT
I need a church that focuses on following Christ. Specifically, a place that values listening.
When I first started studying the New Testament as an adult, it struck me how Jesus listened to those who disagreed with him the most. I came to value listening as the highest form of Love.
Modern Christianity is lacking this fundamentally important skill. There are a great many assumptions that aren’t allowed to be examined. Those who wish to ask the deepest questions are seen as trouble makers, or far worse.
I’m more comfortable around non-Christians or other churchless followers of Christ. These are the places I hear tough questions and receive compassionate listening.
I’m not ready to not have a church. Regular worship and fellowship are important to me. It’s important for me to hear things I don’t agree with or fully comprehend. I want to be challenged and loved in a community that respects my spiritual journey.
I understand how rare this kind of group may be. My journey in the home education sphere has had a similar arc of excommunication and coalescence. Considering my current endeavors and energy, I don’t think I have it in me to establish a new faith community. Maybe someday.
Balance
Going back and forth between jiu-jitsu and soccer seems to be my sweet spot. Each is hard on different parts of my body and my spirit appreciates that I have some idea of what I’m doing on a soccer pitch.
Family Game Time
My elder son is getting much better at Monopoly and giving us a run for our money.
Truth
I could best my 21-year-old self in any contest, physical or mental. I feel very young and wish more 40-somethings would chose to feel the same.
Lego Unschool Club is Back!
We’ve had a slow time rebuilding attendance at our Lego Unschool Club. Homeschoolers are busy people and fitting another meet into their schedule can be tough.
With consistency and patience, the club is growing again and we have ideas flying around the work table again.
We’re gearing up for local derby car and shipbuilding contests. The initial creations are inventive and fun.
